Captains Tee Off for Year of Hospice Care Support

The men's and ladies’ captains at Hankley Comon Golf Club have both chosen Phyllis Tuckwell as their charity of the year for 2025. They are aiming to raise £25,000 over the year, through a full calendar of activities, including both golfing competitions and evening events. All of the money raised will go directly towards helping fund the specialist palliative and end of life care that Phyllis Tuckwell provides for local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.

Ladies' captain, Cathy Russell, lives near to Phyllis Tuckwell's new Hospice, which is currently being built on the location of the old building. “I’ve seen the impact of Phyllis Tuckwell’s services and the difference they make, through friends who have had personal experience of them,” she said. “They're a really important part of our local community and one that I’m proud to support.”

Simon Lincoln, the men’s captain, chose Phyllis Tuckwell because his father-in-law spent time in the Hospice as well as being cared for at home. Simon’s wife, Helen, now volunteers for Phyllis Tuckwell, and both Simon and Helen feel a close connection to the care that the charity provides. “The men's and ladies' captains each choose a charity of the year to support during their time as captains, but it's unusual for them to both choose the same one!” said Simon. “We’ve received really positive feedback from the club’s members, who have seen our joint approach and the way we have worked in unison for the same cause.”

Simon and Cathy will be supporting Phyllis Tuckwell until January 2026. They have already organised a Bridge event which, through entry fees and a raffle, raised £1,400; and Saturday Morning Roll Up, where players roll up and are drawn playing partners, and the player with the best four competition rounds between March and October wins. This competition has already raised nearly £1,000. They will also be holding a charity auction later in the year, along with other fundraising events.

“We’re delighted that Cathy and Simon have chosen Phyllis Tuckwell as their charity of the year and are very grateful for their support,” said Helena Burke, community fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Every day, we support over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support, but as the NHS/Government only covers 25% of our costs, we have to raise over £25,000 every day to do this. Our local community is so important in helping us to do this and we really appreciate all the support they give us.”

Please help us

All our services are free, but this is only possible due to the generosity of our amazing community. The Government/NHS only provide 25% of our costs, so we need to raise over £25,000 every day to provide our vital services.

Please donate what you can to help keep hospice care available to all those in our community who need us.
