Retail Shops in Spotlight during Hospice Care Week

7th – 13th October is Hospice Care Week! This national campaign is organised by Hospice UK and highlights the importance of end of life care for patients and their loved ones. Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell provides Hospice Care for patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer, in West Surrey and North-East Hampshire.

Phyllis Tuckwell’s warehouse in Farnborough is just one of the places you can pick up some of its amazing, preloved items and support local Hospice Care.

Every day, Phyllis Tuckwell supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support. However, as the NHS/Government only covers 25% of its costs, it has to raise over £25,000 every single day to do this. This year, Hospice Care Week focusses on the importance of hospice charities' retail outlets in helping to raise vital funds.

Phyllis Tuckwell has 18 shops across Surrey and Hampshire, which sell a wide range of preloved clothes, shoes, accessories, books, games, toys, CDs, DVDs, homeware and even furniture. They are a great place to find a bargain, especially as each month the charity’s warehouse in Farnborough holds a kilo sale, where you can bag a whole kilo of clothes, shoes and accessories for just £7.50! It also sells items online through outlets such as Depop, Vinted and eBay, so if you’re looking for a vintage or unique item then this is the place to go!

Phyllis Tuckwell is always looking for donations of quality, second-hand items to sell in its shops, which raise an incredible £3.2m a year to help fund the charity’s palliative and end of life care. This care is given free of charge to Phyllis Tuckwell’s patients and families, which is why raising the money to pay for it is so important.

Buying preloved items from charity shops is a great way to help the environment and a local charity at the same time as finding the perfect item for yourself. By donating to and shopping in Phyllis Tuckwell’s shops, you can help it provide much needed and greatly appreciated care to those who are facing the worst of times.

Our shops are packed full of amazing, preloved items and, as we receive donations through the week, different items are put on the shelves every day,” said Barry Young, head of retail at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Our volunteers do a fantastic job of sorting and pricing stock and serving customers. We’re always looking for more volunteers, so if you’d like to join the team, we’d love to hear from you!

Phyllis Tuckwell will be posting stories from its shops throughout Hospice Care Week, so keep an eye on its social media posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Please help us

All our services are free, but this is only possible due to the generosity of our amazing community. The Government/NHS only provide 25% of our costs, so we need to raise over £25,000 every day to provide our vital services.

Please donate what you can to help keep hospice care available to all those in our community who need us.
