Local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell is offering group bereavement support sessions to anyone whose loved one died of a terminal illness, such as cancer or motor neurone disease.

Phyllis Tuckwell provides palliative and end of life care for local patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness. Its Listening Lounge bereavement support sessions take place at the Beacon Centre in Guildford, from 1.30pm to 3pm on the second Monday of every month.
The sessions do not offer formal counselling, but rather are a place where bereaved people can come to talk to others about their loved one. They offer a compassionate and non-judgemental environment where people can find solace in the company of others who truly understand how they are feeling, because they themselves are in a similar situation. At the sessions, people can share their experiences, memories and challenges related to their loss. The sessions are facilitated by Phyllis Tuckwell’s patient and family advisors, who can provide support and guidance on a range of matters, and signpost people on to other services outside of the group that may help further. The last hour of each session will be dedicated to a specific topic, on a rolling programme. These will range from practical skills to self-care, to help people build confidence as they adjust to their new circumstances.
Caroline Baker, from Phyllis Tuckwell’s Patient and Family Support team, said: “Our Listening Lounge sessions are open to anyone whose loved one died of a terminal illness, regardless of how recently or long ago that was. Talking to others who have also experienced bereavement can help people feel that they’re not alone, and you would be very welcome at the sessions.”
