Enjoy Bridge and Lunch for Hospice Care

Enjoy a social game of Bridge along with lunch out, whilst raising money to support local Hospice Care - what better way to spend the day?

The Farnham Café Bridge event will take place on Wednesday 11th September, with lunch options available from four different restaurants within Farnham town centre. Organised by Michael Brown with the help of Victor Lesk, the event will raise money for local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell, which provides supportive and end of life care for adult patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer, in West Surrey and North-East Hampshire.

Café Bridge is a social event where a game of bridge is played over multiple cafés and restaurants in a local area. Each pair of players is put into a group, and different groups start at different locations, where they play a round before moving to the next location. They are each given a map, and after each round the groups are mixed up, so pairs will play different people throughout the day. Entry fees will depend on which of the local restaurants you would like to have lunch in, and all teams will eat in their chosen restaurants at the same, time, as there will be a lunch break between two of the rounds. You and your partner could choose to be a pair of Spades for £90 and have lunch at The Bush; an £80 pair of Hearts and eat at the Giggling Squid or The Castle; or a £70 pair of Diamonds and eat at Pizza Express. You will be able to choose your price and lunch preferences when you sign up, and the finalised menus for the event will be announced two to three weeks before the event. Instructions for arrival on the day will be sent to you by email by 3pm on 10th September. Scores are entered by players on their phones using the BriAn app-based scoring system, which allows the organisers to declare a winner very soon after the last board is played.

“We would like to say a big thank you to Michael, Victor and everyone involved in organising the 2024 Farnham Café Bridge event, for choosing to support Phyllis Tuckwell,” said Helena Burke, community fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Every day we support over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support, but as the NHS/Government only cover 25% of our costs, we have to raise over £25,000 every single day to do this, and so rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community.”

“It’s impossible not to have a good time at the Farnham Café Bridge, in the company of the friendliest bridge players imaginable!” said Michael Brown, who is organising the event. “Pre-registration and booking early give you a better shot at getting your choice of lunch venue, so please do contact me if you would like to be added to the pre-registration list for future events. We look forward to welcoming you on 11th September!”

Please help us

All our services are free, but this is only possible due to the generosity of our amazing community. The Government/NHS only provide 25% of our costs, so we need to raise over £25,000 every day to provide our vital services.

Please donate what you can to help keep hospice care available to all those in our community who need us.
