5th-11th May is Dying Matters Awareness Week, an annual event organised by Hospice UK, which focuses on the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement. This year, its theme is The Culture of Dying Matters.
Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell provides palliative and end of life care for patients and families across West Surrey and North-East Hampshire, who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. It recognises and respects the diverse cultures and beliefs of each of its patients, and their relatives and carers, and tailors the care it offers to each of them according to their individual needs and preferences.
Phyllis Tuckwell cares for people on its In-Patient Unit, at its Living Well sessions and through its Hospice at Home services. Every day it supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support.
“Dying, death and bereavement are things which affect us all, and we are committed to providing high quality services to all our diverse local communities,” said Sarah Church, chief executive at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Each individual, regardless of their culture, religion or beliefs is respected and welcomed. We want all those that we care for to know that we are here to support them in whatever way is best for them, at this difficult time.”
