In local areas, driving patients to and from the Beacon Centre in Guildford.

Many of our patients are unable to drive, and some struggle to get to our Beacon Centre in Guildford to see clinicians and join in with therapy groups. Our volunteer drivers take patients to and from the Beacon Centre for appointments, clinics and groups, and our patient escorts accompany them as they are being driven, chatting to them as appropriate and ensuring their safety and comfort.

You will be asked to attend a one-day mandatory Volunteer Level 1 course training day. You will also need to attend our Moving and Handling training, safeguarding training and complete a minimum of two shifts shadowing an experienced volunteer.

This is a busy role as Reception is the first point of call for visitors to Headway House, in addition to phone calls and all deliveries.   Volunteers provide a friendly, professional, welcoming service to support all areas of Phyllis Tuckwell.

Various hours – 3 hour time commitment weekly

In local areas, supporting patients and families with practical matters such as shopping and going out as well as offering companionship in the patient’s own home. 

Many of our patients and their families find managing their illness extremely challenging.  Home Support aims to alleviate this stress by helping in all sorts of practical ways: shopping, ironing, gardening, taking patients on outings, accompanying patients on hospital visits, allowing care givers a few hours off for a well-earned break and most importantly, taking time to sit and listen.

Applicants must be age 21 years or over.

You will be asked to attend a three-day mandatory Volunteer Level 2 training course.   If you are an ex-healthcare professional you will only need to attend a single day of Level 1 training.  You will also need to attend our Moving and Handling training and safeguarding training.

Keen gardeners needed to volunteer their  time and skills to help keen the lawns, paths and beds at the Beacon Centre in good order.  2 – 3 hours once a week or fortnight.

We currently have ten Trustees from a range of professions, and we are looking to increase the number to twelve over the next year. We are a close-knit team which has been working well. The Hospice is currently being re-built at a cost of £17.5m and should open in Spring 2026. This is going to an important and busy time for the Charity as we will be developing our strategy in a changing healthcare environment.

We are currently seeking to appoint a Trustee who has:

• a clear understanding of our mission to put the patients and their families at the centre of any decisions made.
• compassion with a respect to the nature of Palliative care.
• a desire to work collaboratively with fellow Trustees and volunteers.
• strategic thinking for the charities long-term aims.
• integrity so that decisions made by the Board are in the best interest of the Charity.
• good governance to ensure we comply with our legal and ethical goals and
• the time and commitment needed to join our high-performing Board

and are particularly keen to hear from lawyers with expertise in commercial or corporate law, who can bring strategic legal insight and governance experience to our Board.
