The Barnes Big Band
The Barnes Big Band play wide ranging and accessible big band jazz including the music of the Count Basie Orchestra right through to more modern compositions written for the Barnes band by musicians associated with it over the years.
Joining the band is top jazz singer, Vanessa Rose, to perform some vocal favourites made famous by Natalie Cole, daughter of the legendary Nat King Cole. These will include It’s Only a Paper Moon, Thou Swell and It’s Almost Like Being In Love. Vanessa has appeared several time with the Barnes band in the last year, and is well known on the London jazz scene for her rich and soulful performances.
The programme will also include music from top big band arrangers Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico (including Strike up the Band, Warm Breeze), Quincy Jones, Gordon Goodwin, Tom Kubis, Dave Barduhn and Francy Boland (Lullaby of the Leaves). We will also celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary jazz trumpet player Miles Davis, by including two of his classics - Milestones and Nardis.
The band comprises some of the finest jazz musicians in the London area. It is led by local trombonist Andrew Butcher who has played with the band for approaching 20 years but took over in 2018 from Stan Reynolds, a trumpet player with the internationally renowned Ted Heath Orchestra.
With special thanks to our sponsor, Hall Hunter Partnership for sponsoring 'Big Band Jazz at The Hogs Back Brewery'.
At Hall Hunter Partnerships, they put their heart and soul into producing berries people love, from three beautiful farms located in the countryside of the south of England. Each and every berry that leaves their farms has been grown using methods they've carefully honed over the years, so they know the fruit you enjoy is always succulent, fresh and delicious.
Thanks also to the Hogs Back Brewery for hosting us, and The Barnes Big Band performing for us, all in support of Phyllis Tuckwell.
