Inspired by the care which her terminally ill dad received when he was admitted to the In-Patient Unit at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, Lucy and her fiancé Pete, decided to support Phyllis Tuckwell in return, on their wedding day.
“It was our way of saying thank you,” says Lucy. “It seemed like the most practical way to turn something negative into a positive, so that others could benefit from Phyllis Tuckwell’s care in the same way that my dad did.”
With the help of Jane, manager of the Phyllis Tuckwell shop in Ash, Lucy and Pete managed to find many items for their special day in the charity’s shops in Ash and Aldershot, including Lucy’s wedding dress, Pete’s shirt and jacket, and their wedding decorations.
“Instead of asking for presents, we asked instead for people’s presence – for them to simply attend our wedding and celebrate the day with us – and instead of buying us a gift, to donate what they would have spent to Phyllis Tuckwell, in memory of Dad,” continues Lucy.
“We are really pleased that we were able to help Lucy and Pete as they prepared for their wedding day,” says Jane, manager of the Phyllis Tuckwell shop in Ash. “It was so kind of them to ask for donations to Phyllis Tuckwell instead of wedding gifts, and the money they have helped raise will all go directly towards helping fund the supportive and end of life care which we provide for patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.”
“Pete and I would like to thank Jane at the Phyllis Tuckwell shop, Messheads hair salon in Aldershot, who donated their fee for doing my wedding day hairstyle to Phyllis Tuckwell, and everyone else who made a donation,” adds Lucy.
