Dedicate a star on our virtual night sky

Light up a Life 2024

Due to the redevelopment of our Hospice site in Farnham and the building of your new Hospice, we were very grateful to Guildford Cathedral for hosting Light up a Life again this year.

If you were unable to attend the service outside Guildford Cathedral, you will find a live stream of the service here on Sunday 8th December. You will also be able view a list of the dedications made.

Thank you to everyone who attended or watched Light up a Life on Sunday, 8th December.

We are very grateful to Guildford Cathedral for accommodating us by holding the service inside the Cathedral at the last minute due to the challenging weather conditions that evening.

For those who would like to watch a recording of the service, please find the link below.

If you would prefer to view the dedications projected onto the outside of the Cathedral, we have provided a separate link for that.

Light up a Life

Remember a loved one this Christmas with Light up a Life

This year's Light up a Life service will take place outside Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 8th December at 7.45pm.

On the night, we will join together for readings and carols, and the image of a Christmas tree will be projected onto the front of the Cathedral building. During the service, the lights on the tree will be 'switched on', and after the service the names of those who have had a dedication made in their memory will be projected onto the front of the Cathedral, where they will remain until 10pm.

Dedications

Should you wish to, you can make a dedication in memory of someone special to you. Please note: the deadline has now passed to have your dedication projected onto the cathedral or in the order of service, but you can still have your loved ones name in our virtual nights sky.

By making a dedication you will also help fund our vital services, ensuring that we can care for patients and families when they need us most.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Light up a Life

Light up a Life is a traditional event in the Phyllis Tuckwell calendar, where those who wish to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones, are invited to join us for a very special service of readings and carols that will be held outside Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 8th December at 7.45pm.

During the service, we will be projecting the image of a Christmas tree onto the front of the Cathedral building and 'switching on' its lights to represent the lives of those who are much loved and missed. The names of those who have had a dedication made in their memory will also be projected onto the front of the Cathedral building, after the service.

We expect the service to last approximately 45 minutes.

Can I attend this year's service in person?

We would be delighted if you could join us for this year's service, which will be held outside Guildford Cathedral. Everyone is welcome.

Please note, seating will not be available at Guildford Cathedral, and remember to wrap up warm and bring a torch, as the service will be held outside.

Where do I park?

Parking is available at Guildford Cathedral for those who wish to attend the service and view the projection on Sunday 8th December. Overflow parking will be available at the University of Surrey. Please car share when possible and allow plenty of time to park. Overflow parking will be available at the University of Surrey. Parking at Surrey University is free after 7pm.

How can I make a dedication?

To make a dedication in memory of your loved one visit www.pth.org.uk/lual to add a light to our virtual night sky, which you can view whenever you wish, or call 01252 729446

You can make a dedication in memory of anyone who is special to you, whether they were cared for by Phyllis Tuckwell or not.

Please note that the date has passed to have your dedications to be included in the Order of Service and Cathedral Projection, but will still appear in our virtual nights sky.

Will I receive a copy of the Order of Service?

The Order of Service will be available to download from our website from Friday 6th December 2024. It will also be handed out to those who attend the service at the Cathedral on Sunday 8th December.

What happens if I can't attend the service?

If you are unable to attend the service in person you can still watch it online, as it will be broadcast live on this page. It will also be recorded, so you can watch it again at a later date.

How long will the names be projected onto Guildford Cathedral?

The names are in alphabetical order and will be projected up in a continuous loop from after the service until 10pm. Each loop of names takes approx. 18-20mins.

Do take advantage of Seasons Café to keep warm if you wish to view the projection more than once.

Please also note that different names are displayed on both sides of the front of the Cathedral, either side of the virtual Christmas tree so when looking for your loved ones name, please check both sides.

How much does a dedication cost?

There is no minimum donation for each dedication, all we ask is that you are as generous as possible, so that you can help us to continue providing our vital care to local patients and families...because every day is precious.

Can anyone make a dedication?

Yes - of course. Light up a Life is open to anyone who wishes to remember a loved one or someone special to them, irrespective of whether they were a patient under our care or not.

Is the event fully accessible and wheelchair friendly?

The event is fully accessible. Please use the accessible pathways/routes available. If you have a blue badge and require a disabled parking space, please make a marshal aware on arrival.

Will there be any refreshments available at Guildford Cathedral?

We are grateful to Season's Cafe at Guildford Cathedral who are kindly opening from 5pm-10pm especially for Light up a Life. They will be serving hot drinks, including mulled wine, warm sausage rolls and cakes for you to purchase. Phyllis Tuckwell will also be handing out complementary mince pies outside.

Are there any toilets open at Guildford Cathedral?

Yes - the toilets at Guildford Cathedral will be open for use for the duration of our event.

Will the projection of dedications by live streamed?

Sadly the projection of dedications is not easy to capture and read through a camera lens, so this part of the projection will only be available to view in person on the night.

Can I still come and view the projection, even if I can't attend the service?

Yes - the projection of dedications will play continuously on a loop from 8.15pm - 10pm on Sunday 8th December - you are welcome at any point during this time to view the projection.

Is Sunday 8th December the only date when the projection of dedications will be available to view?

Yes, this year, as our service is at the same location as the light projection, we have combined both these events to be held on the same date, so this is the only chance to view the dedications this year.

Please help us

All our services are free, but this is only possible due to the generosity of our amazing community. The Government/NHS only provide 25% of our costs, so we need to raise over £25,000 every day to provide our vital services.

Please donate what you can to help keep hospice care available to all those in our community who need us.
