Light up a Life 2023

Sunday 10th December 2023

Outside Guildford Cathedral (GU2 7UP)

Service of Remembrance: 7.45pm

Projection of dedications: 8.30pm – 10.30pm

Everyone welcome – free to attend

We are delighted to be able to hold our Light Up A Light service this year outside Guildford Cathedral where we will be projecting a huge Christmas tree onto the front of the Cathedral. Please come and join us as we “switch on” the lights on this tree in memory of all those no longer with us, and join us for our special service of carols, readings and prayers. At the end of the service the names of all those being remembered will also be projected up onto the front of the Cathedral.

Due to the redevelopment of our Hospice site in Farnham and the building of our new Hospice we are very grateful to Guildford Cathedral for hosting Light up a Life this year.

Please wrap up warm as the service is outdoors (without seating) and please do bring a torch. Parking will be available at Guildford Cathedral but please do car share if possible. (Overflow parking if required will be next door at Surrey University but please follow marshal directions.)

We expect the service to last approx. 45mins

The event is fully accessible. Please use the accessible pathways/routes available. If you have a blue badge and require a disabled parking space, please make a marshal aware on arrival.

If you would like to join us for the service but are unable to attend in person then you can watch online at www.pth.org.uk/lual2023 where it will be live streamed and also a recording will be available after. Please note that the live stream will be of just the Service of Remembrance. (Sadly the projection of dedications is not easy to capture and read through a camera lens so this part of the projection will only be available to view in person on the night.)

Dedications

Thank you to all those who have already made a dedication in memory of your loved one. If you have yet to make a dedication in our virtual night sky, but would like to, then please click here or call 01252 729446.

PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for dedications to appear in the Order of Service and to be projected onto Guildford Cathedral has now closed.

If you are unable to attend the service or if you would prefer a quiet moment of reflection viewing the name of your loved one as it is projected onto the front of the Cathedral then the projection will continue until 10:30pm.

Please note that this is the only date that the projection will be available to view this year so we do hope you will join us at some point during this evening as it is a special tribute and opportunity for you to quietly reflect and remember.

If you have any questions about Light up a Life – please read our FAQs below or call 01252 729446.

We look forward to welcoming you to Light Up A Life.

FAQs – Light up a Life event 2023

What is Light up a Life?

Light up a Life is a traditional event in the Phyllis Tuckwell calendar, where those who wish to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones who are no longer with us, are invited to come together for a very special service. In the past, our Light up a Life service has been held at our Hospice in Farnham. However, as we are currently in the process of building a new Hospice on our existing site, we will be holding the service outside Guildford Cathedral this year. It will still include readings and carols as before, but will just be in a different location. Instead of switching on the lights on our Christmas tree during the service, we will be projecting a Christmas tree onto the front of the Cathedral building and ‘switching on’ its lights. The names of those who have had a dedication made in their memory will be projected onto the Cathedral building after the service, on a continuous loop, until 10.30pm that evening.

How can I make a dedication?

To make a dedication in memory of your loved one visit www.pth.org.uk/lual to add a light to our virtual night sky which you can view whenever you wish or call 01252 729446.

PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for dedications to appear in the Order of Service and to be projected onto Guildford Cathedral has now closed.

How much does a dedication cost?

There is no minimum donation for each dedication, all we ask is that you are as generous as possible, so that you can help us to continue providing our vital care to local patients and families… because every day is precious.

Can anyone make a dedication?

Yes – of course. Light up a Life is open to anyone who wishes to remember a loved one or someone special to them irrespective of whether they were a patient under our care or not.

Can I attend this year’s service in person?

We would be delighted if you could join us for this year’s service, which will be held outside the Guildford Cathedral building on Sunday 10th December at 7.45pm. After the service, the names of those who have had a dedication made in their memory will be projected onto the front of the Cathedral building, on a continuous loop, until 10.30pm and you will be able to view in person between 8.30pm and 10.30pm. Please note: seating will not be available at Guildford Cathedral, and remember to wrap up warm and bring a torch, as the service and projection will both be held outside.

Where do I park?

Parking is available at Guildford Cathedral for those who wish to attend the service and view the projection on Sunday 10th December. Please car share where possible. (Overflow parking if required will be next door at Surrey University but please follow marshal directions. )

Is the event fully accessible and wheelchair friendly?

The event is fully accessible. Please use the accessible pathways/routes available. If you have a blue badge and require a disabled parking space, please make a marshal aware on arrival.

Will there be any refreshments available at Guildford Cathedral?

We hope to have hot drinks and mince pies available; we are just confirming if this is possible and will update these FAQ’s when we know more.

Are there any toilets open at Guildford Cathedral?

Yes – the Toilets at Guildford Cathedral will be open for use for the duration of our event.

Will I receive a copy of the Order of Service?

The Order of Service will be available to download from our website from Friday 8th December 2023. It will also be handed out to those who attend the service at the Cathedral on Sunday 10th December.

What happens if I can’t attend the service?

If you are unable to attend the service in person you can still watch it online, as it will be broadcast live on www.pth.org.uk/lual2023. It will also be recorded, so you can watch it again at a later date.

Will the projection of dedications be live streamed?

Sadly the projection of dedications is not easy to capture and read through a camera lens so this part of the projection will only be available to view in person on the night.

Can I still come and view the projection, even if I can’t attend the service?

Yes – the projection of dedications will play continuously on a loop from 8.30pm – 10:30pm on Sunday 10th December – you are welcome at any point during this time to view the projection.

Is Sunday 10th December the only date when the projection of dedications be available to view?

Yes – this year as our service is at the same location as the light projection, we have combined both these events to be held on the same date, so this is the only chance to view the dedications this year.

Thank you and we look forward to you joining us for Light up a Life 2023.
