Getting Out In The Fresh Air For Hospice Care

With the evenings drawing out and flowers starting to bloom in the hedgerows, spring finally seems in sight. So why not celebrate the arrival of some sunnier weather with a stroll in the beautiful Surrey countryside? Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care has a few ideas to get you out and about over the spring and summer.

If you’re a dog owner, make sure Wellies & Walkies is in your diary! This sponsored walk will take place on Sunday 15th March, with dogs and their walkers meeting at the Rural Life Centre, ready to start their walk around the beautiful Bourne Woods anytime between 10am and 11am. You can choose a 2 mile or 4.5 mile route, but you don’t have to decide until the day, so don’t worry about making your choice just yet. Sign up now at shop.pth.org.uk/wellies-walkies-2020. Tickets are £10 per dog, with humans walking for free, and at the end of the walk all participating dogs will receive a doggie bag, while their owners can peruse the doggie gift stalls and buy tickets for the doggie raffle! Local vets Cathcart & Winn are kindly sponsoring this event and will be providing veterinary services on the day. See Phyllis Tuckwell’s Facebook page for updates on the walk.

You don’t need a dog for this walk! Enjoy the fresh spring air and beautiful May flowers at Walk for the Wards on Saturday 2nd May. Choose from a leisurely five mile stroll or a longer nine mile ramble. Both routes start from Stockbridge Farm in Tilford and take walkers through the beautiful sandy and scenic terrain of Frensham Common. You can start your walk anytime between 9.30am and 10.30am, and everyone who takes part will be rewarded with a delicious cream tea at the end. So whether you’re after a few hours in the sunshine or are taking part in memory of a loved one, it’s the perfect event. Register now at www.pth.org.uk/walk-for-the-wards and Phyllis Tuckwell will send you your walker’s pack and ideas to help you fundraise. Registration is £15 for adults and £7 for children (U14) but will be higher on the day. Dogs are welcome too (but please keep them on a lead).

If you’d rather run than walk, why not try Dash of Colour, the colourful fun run which will see you covered in multi-coloured powder paint! Run, jog or walk the 5k route, and at each kilometre mark you’ll be showered with a different coloured paint! This rainbow-coloured run will take place on Saturday 5th September at Frimley Lodge Park, at 1pm. Get in quick, because registration is £15 for the first 100 participants, and £18 thereafter.

All of these events will raise money to help fund the vital hospice care which Phyllis Tuckwell provides for local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. As the NHS/Government only covers 20% of its costs, it has to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to offer all of its services, which are given free of charge to its patients and their families.
