Wills and Legacies

You could help us make a real difference to the future quality of care available to people in your area living with a terminal illness by leaving a gift in your Will to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care.

A gift in your Will, of any value, is a way of giving that is an important part of how we continue to develop our extensive range of services, at the Hospice, at the Beacon Centre and out in our community. But only one in seven of us who make a Will includes a gift to charity.

For many people living on a fixed income, retired or with growing families, giving in their lifetime can be difficult. Donating through a gift in your Will (known as a legacy) is an attractive alternative, enabling you to give greater support with a gift from your estate after your death. It is also a very tax-efficient way of giving, as gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax. Also, if you pledge at least 10% of your estate to charity, you also will benefit from a lower rate of inheritance tax (36% instead of 40%) on the rest.

You can choose to donate:
• A percentage or the whole of the residue of your estate – known as a ’residuary legacy’ This means Phyllis Tuckwell would receive the residue of your estate once any debts, expenses, specific gifts and taxes have been paid. This is a great way of ensuring your donation increases in value along with your estate.
• A specific sum of money (known as a ‘pecuniary’ legacy)
• A named item such as a piece of jewellery or art (known as a ‘specific’ legacy)

Any solicitor can advise you how to either add a Codicil to your Will to include a new gift, or prepare a new one. Some suggested wording on how to leave a gift in you Will to Phyllis Tuckwell can be found on our Legacy information leaflet – which you can download here.

You can also include any other instructions for your funeral in your Will, for example you may wish to request donations to be made to Phyllis Tuckwell instead of flowers. Here is some suggested wording:
To my executors: I wish that instead of flowers being sent to my funeral, donations be made to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, Waverley Lane, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 8BL (registered charity 264501)
