Hospice says “thank you” to carers to celebrating Carer’s week

Celebrating 10 years of the Share n Care group and coinciding with Carer’s week, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice invited 16 current carers and 12 previous carers to a pampering session that took place at the Hospice in Farnham on Saturday 16 June.

Carers had the choice of either attending the whole day starting 10 – 4pm or half a day to receive treatments of their choice. Treatments ranged from Complementary Therapies such as Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Beauty Treatments involving Manicures and Pedicures.

The purpose of the day was not only to give carers the chance for some relaxing treatments as well as a lovely lunch but to also receive support from members of the hospice Share n Care team. It is a much needed ‘time out’ for carers who do such a wonderful job looking after loved ones and gives them some time for themselves

Carers in attendance included Lynne Webber who cares for her 26 year old daughter Holly Webber from Church Crookham, Maureen Venn who cares for Paul who has been a patient of the Hospice since 2002. Feedback from the carers included comments such as, “Thank you for such a relaxing and enjoyable day, it was great to talk to other cares and take time out”. Dennis Bunjay who previously cared for his late wife said of the event, “Congratulations to the Hospice on it’s 10th year anniversary for Share n Care and special good wishes for your continued success in the excellent job you do, the Hospice does such a fantastic job on supporter carers”.

Bridget Purser, Complementary Therapies Co-Ordinator, added, “Share n Care has been running monthly meetings to carers for the past 10 years and it was wonderful to have some past carers come in and celebrate with cake and bubbly in the afternoon and talk about how they found our support so helpful during the time they were carers”.

“We would like to say a huge thank- you to Lornamead based in Camberely, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Bentley Support Group and Surrey Life magazine who donated gifts including cosmetic samples, creams, lotions, moisturisers for our carers to take away in a goodie bag and also to all our therapy and other volunteers who gave up their time to help on the day”.

Carers week takes place from Monday 18 June – 24 June and is a time to celebrate the work that carers do 10 per cent of the total population are carers which is nearly six million people in the UK. For more information on gaining support please visit www.pth.org.uk.
