Fundraiser carried Olympic torch in aid of Hospice

Congratulations to Erica Betton for carrying the Olympic torch in Slough on Tuesday 9 July. Erica was nominated for this momentous honour by her sister Hazel, 34 who lives in Frimley. Erica says, “In 2010 a friend’s mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham did a wonderful job caring for her. I know that as such a small charity they need all the support they can get, and I want to help them as much as I can.”

Describing her experience Erica added, “My legs were like jelly. It was great to have my family along the side and the crowds that gathered to watch were amazing. The whole experience was over very quickly but it was absolutely breath taking to have been involved in such a historic moment”.

Erica completed the Three Peaks Challenge in summer 2010, walking the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours, and raised £3,500 for the hospice. The adventure spurred her on to do more challenges, and in October 2011 she trekked the Druid’s Challenge, an 84-mile three-day ultra marathon.

This month she will run a half marathon in Windsor with her other sister Lindsay, 32, as she prepares for a seven-day trek of Mount Kilimanjaro in October.” The training for Kilimanjaro is going well but it’s creeping up and starting to scare me a bit,” she said.

Gemma Craig, Community and Events Fundraising Assistant at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice said, “What a year Erica is having. Not only is she an Olympic torch bearer, which is a huge honour in recognition of the fundraising she has done for the Hospice , but she’s also taking on the challenge of conquering Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro this October. We are thrilled that she’s supporting the Hospice in this way and cannot express how grateful we are for her support over the last couple of years. The money she’s going to raise will really help us to continue serving patients and their families living with a terminal illness from our local community. If you would like to sponsor Erica then please visit here or if you fancy actually taking on a challenge like Climbing Kilimanjaro in aid of the Hospice then please contact us on 01252 729446 to find out more.”
