Day Hospice
Day Hospice
Day Hospice is one of the busiest places at the Hospice. The patients who visit Day Hospice come for a variety of reasons – some come for the companionship and activities, others come for Specialist Medical, Therapy or Nursing care, other visit to allow their carers a respite break one day a week. All the patients are able to live at home, but can take advantage of all the Hospice services, such as Out-patient Doctor appointments, Complementary Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing care, by attending the Hospice for a short period.
Day Hospice is open for two days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am to 3pm.
The Hospice owns several wheelchair adapted vehicles which are driven by volunteers and are available to pick up patients from their homes, if required. Lunch is served at 12pm and afternoon tea is available to those who would like it. There are often craft activities and musical entertainment in Day Hospice for patients who are well enough and want to join in.
On Mondays Day Hospice opens it doors for a group workshop called “A Brush with Art”. This is a creative arts group and patients may refer themselves should they wish to avail of this. This group runs for eight weeks at a time and enables the members to explore and express themselves in a creative way under the guidance of experienced group leaders. Many patients gain a lot of pleasure and companionship from their weekly visits to Day Hospice and we often hear our patients say “I wish I had come earlier”.
Additional Information
Day Hospice is often referred to as ‘Barbers'. This is because part of the cost is funded by the Worshipful Company of Barber Surgeons, a London livery company whose links with the Hospice go back many years to Sir Edward Tuckwell, who was a London surgeon and the husband of Phyllis Tuckwell.
We produce information leaflets on a range of topics to inform and support. This is our Day Hospice leaflet, which you may like to print out. This is our Brush With Art leaflet for more information on this creative group. Our full range of leaflets can be found on the information leaflets page.
